About Dr. Ulrich Lanz

Shoulder specialist Dr. Ulrich Lanz grew up in Graz, Austria, where he was a successful ice hockey player in the Austrian League and the Austrian national team during his youth.

His enthusiasm for sports lead him to study medicine -- first in Graz -- and then at the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna, Austria from where he graduated as Dr. med. univ. Following his studies, he spent the initial stages of his career in Vienna, before spending six months in Germany. He returned to Vienna in 2006, working at Austria’s major teaching hospitals for orthopaedic and casualty surgery.

Dr. Lanz won the AGA Mitek Schulterfellowship in 2010, which gave him the opportunity to spend one year at the Alps Surgery Institute in Annecy, France, with Dr. Laurent Lafosse, one of the most innovative and highly recognised shoulder surgeons in the world. This training enabled him to acquire special skills and additional know-how in general shoulder surgery, as well as in keyhole surgery and open surgery techniques, which are still only rarely used in Austria.

Following his return from France, Dr. Lanz first began to work as a shoulder surgeon at the Barmherzige Schwestern hospital in Vienna, before being offered a position at the prestigious Orthopaedic Hospital Vienna/Speising, where he worked as Specialty Registrar and Special Team Leader for Shoulder Conditions up to the end of June 2016. At that time, he also opened his private practice at the Sportorthopädie Zentrum in Vienna.

Shoulder specialist Dr. Lanz is a lecturer at various international shoulder instruction courses, gives presentations and holds workshops and training courses in Austria and abroad, as well as publishing articles in the peer-reviewed literature.

Dr. Ulrich Lanz is also an expert consultant for Arthrex and DePuy Mitek, two leading R&D medical technology companies in the field of orthopaedics and orthopaedic surgery.

In addition, Dr. Lanz is a member of the AGA (German Speaking Region Association for Arthroscopy and Joint Surgery) Shoulder Committee and organised multiple work shadowing sessions at the Orthopaedic Hospital Speising every year to pass on his knowledge to interested colleagues.

Furthermore, the former professional athlete has been a team physician for the Austrian Davis Cup team since 2014 and the Austrian Track and Field national team since 2007, both during training and at national and international competitions. Since 2019, Dr. Ulrich Lanz is tournament doctor of the tennis tournament Erste Bank Open ATP 500 at Vienna's Stadthalle.
